The UK remains committed to supporting democracy, human rights and media freedom in Georgia. We continue to monitor developments closely, including reports of violence against peaceful protesters and the imprisonment of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, whose case we have raised publicly and privately with the Georgian authorities. The UK has consistently made clear that respect for the rule of law, fundamental freedoms and democratic institutions is important for Georgia's long-term prosperity and attractiveness as a destination for international investment. While investment decisions are made by businesses, we regularly assess political and economic developments in Georgia as part of our broader bilateral engagement.

There is no current engagement scheduled to take place between the Georgian business community in London and HM Treasury in relation to UK financial sanctions.
It is the responsibility of all UK persons, including companies, to comply fully with UK financial sanctions. OFSI undertakes regular industry engagement and publishes comprehensive guidance to ensure financial sanctions are understood and complied with effectively across a range of sectors. OFSI will take proportionate enforcement action where it identifies breaches of UK financial sanctions.

The Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), part of HM Treasury, is the UK’s competent authority for the implementation of UK financial sanctions.
It is the responsibility of all UK persons, including companies, to comply fully with UK financial sanctions. OFSI does not routinely advise institutions on an individual basis of the consequences of non-compliance with UK financial sanctions.
OFSI does undertake regular industry engagement and publishes comprehensive guidance to ensure financial sanctions are understood and complied with effectively across a range of sectors, including the banking and financial sectors. The UK takes a strong stand against those promoting the destabilisation of Ukraine, including entities in Georgia that use Russia-aligned misinformation. It is our long-standing policy not to comment on the potential targets of future sanctions, as to do so could undermine their impact.

I am aware of the report in question, and I have raised my own concerns about the imprisonment of opposition figures, pressure on civil society, and attacks on independent media directly with the Georgian Government. The UK will continues to raise those human rights issues with the Georgian authorities, and to work with international partners, including through the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), to support democratic standards and accountability.

The UK remains resolute in our support for civil society, independent media and democratic freedoms in Georgia. Legislation introduced by the Georgian Government over recent years continues to target non-governmental organisations, opposition leaders and independent voices. We are monitoring developments closely and working with international partners. The UK has imposed targeted sanctions on senior Interior Ministry figures responsible for violent attacks on protesters, judges for abusing their positions, and high-ranking officials for enabling serious human rights violations. I cannot comment on potential future sanctions designations, as doing so could undermine their effectiveness.

Democracy in Georgia is under threat, and we are working closely with our European allies to respond to that concern.
Last October, I reiterated my concerns to Georgian Foreign Minister Botchorishvili over democratic backsliding, opposition arrests and attacks on allied Ambassadors.
We urge Georgia’s leadership to reverse repressive legislation, release political prisoners, and return the country to a democratic path.
