To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the position taken by UK Anti-Doping in support of the letter signed by the National Anti-Doping Organisations in their call for Russia to be banned from the Winter Olympic Games to be held in PyeongChang 2018.
The letter underlines the need for Russia to meet all the conditions set by the World Anti-Doping Agency before they can, once again, be considered compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code. As our National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO), UK Anti-Doping is determined to ensure that British athletes compete on a clean, level playing field, that also includes all NADOs being compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code.

Our current travel advice to South Korea is unrestricted for all British Nationals travelling to or residing in South Korea, including the British Winter Olympic and Paralympic Teams. We advise travellers to remain vigilant about heightened tensions on the peninsula and urge them to register for travel advice updates from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) as well as our Twitter and Facebook updates. FCO travel advice is under continuous review. The FCO regularly liaises with the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations in preparation for the games.

Both the UK Government and the Pyeongchang Organising Committee for the Olympic Games in South Korea have contingency plans for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as we do for all major sporting events. As we prepare for the Games, we are in close touch with the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations. The Government keeps all travel advice under constant review, including for the Republic of Korea.

UK Sport does not study how specific countries support their winter sport international athletes, which will be tailored to particular circumstances and differ between sports, but continually scans the international high performance landscape for best practice in all areas of the elite sport environment.

UK Sport funding provided to Sports Aid for the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is confirmed until September 2014. UK Sport and Sport England continue to work together on talent development in England, with the future funding of TASS under consideration.
The 2013/14 TASS programme supports 39 winter sport athletes, 4 of whom are currently in Sochi. Around 50% of Team GB in Sochi have been through the TASS programme.
TASS has its own network of support via the TASS Universities Hub Network and does not use the EIS network or their staff.

Sport England is investing £1.5 million to get more people skiing and snowboarding in England. This investment supports and develops paid and volunteer
coaches to get more people skiing and help talented skiers and snowboarders to develop and progress within the sport.

At present there are 83 skiing and snowboarding facilities in the UK. There are 67 dry ski slopes, six indoor snow centres and 10 outdoor natural snow centres.
Sport England is investing £1.5 million of lottery and exchequer money to get more people skiing and snowboarding in England. This investment focuses on 16 skiing and snowboarding hubs across England as well as Snowsport England’s programme Go Ski Go Board which gives young people over the age of 14 a six week coached introduction to the sports.

Snowsport England works with the English Schools Ski Association (ESSKIA) to establish and maintain links between primary schools and local ski slopes to give more children and young people the opportunity to go skiing and snowboarding. ESSKIA has representatives working in Bromley, Gloucester, Hemel, Pendle, Silksworth, Southampton and Stoke.

We understand that the GB Biathlon team has not applied to UK Sport for National Lottery funding for Sochi 2014. The full GB Olympic team for Sochi will be announced later this month. Any biathlete who qualifies will benefit from the support provided by The British Olympic Association in the run up to and during the Games, in the usual way. UK Sport will announce their funding investments for Pyeongchang 2018 later this year.
