Mr. Ivan Lewis: There is no centrally held information on the number of courses offered. I have set out separately the numbers of
learners in (i) adult and community learning and adult education courses run through local education authorities; (ii) LearnDirect;
and (iii) Skills for Life, in the following tables.

The table covers adult enrolments on courses offered by local education authorities (LEAs). In April 2001, the Learning and Skills
Council (LSC) assumed funding responsibility for both LEA-secured adult and community learning and for former Further Education
Funding Council (FEFC) funded provision. For 2003/ 04, the LSC introduced a new approach to collecting data on adult and community
learning. The new data collection is more harmonised with other LSC funded learning (for example further education) and allows more
flexible analysis. However, it is not possible to form a consistent historical series from the old and new data collections. Using
the new data and methods, in 2003/04, a total of 842,000 learners were enrolled on Adult and Community Learning programmes.
The figures in the following table show the numbers of learners on LearnDirect provision in England in each year since 2000/01, the
earliest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Ivan Lewis: No assessment has been made of the impact that the availability of fieldwork in school science has on science
graduate numbers. We will set out measures to increase the number of students studying the physical sciences and engineering
through the Government's 10 year investment framework for science and innovation, published alongside the 2004 spending review.
Out of classroom learning is already a statutory requirement in National Curriculum Geography and we will continue to encourage
schools to provide fieldwork opportunities in science. We are developing training and guidance for science teachers in fieldwork,
including risk assessment, through our new network of Science Learning Centres.
The Field Studies Council's recent `Review of Outdoor Learning', which the Department part funded, pointed to the potential
learning, attitudinal, interpersonal and social outcomes of fieldwork and out of classroom activity such as leadership, team
working, enquiry and self-reliance.

Alan Johnson: The information requested is not yet available. Information on the number of students who completed foundation degree
(FD) courses in 2002/03 will not be available from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) until January 2004.
The latest available figures from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), showing the distribution of all FD
students by the type of institution in which they are studying, is given in the following table; the HEFCE figures do not identify
whether the course has been studied locally, or in the workplace.
Information on the destinations of students who obtained FDs in 2002/03, including those who proceeded to further study, will not be
available from HESA until July 2004.

Alan Johnson: The latest available information for 2003/04 was published by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS)
on 7 October. It showed that the total number of students accepted for entry to full-time foundation degree (FD) courses had risen
to 5,448, an increase of nearly 80 per cent. compared to the same point last year. The figures were not disaggregated by
institution. UCAS however does not cover students applying to part-time courses, and in 2002/03 around half of all FD students were
on part-time courses.

Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills how many institutions in the United Kingdom provide

Alan Johnson: The latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) show that 12 universities currently
offer courses in Islamic studies, although completion of these courses would not necessarily entitle the successful student to
qualify as an Imam. The number of places on each course is not held centrally. The Home Office and Learning and Skills Council have
recently invited representatives of the Islamic community to join a new working group to advise on training and qualifications for
Imams, including pilot programmes to test different models. The group's interim advice (due in spring 2004) will inform the
development of generic competence-based qualifications for community leadership which may be supported by the Learning and Skills
Council.

The latest figures published by the Universities and Colleges Admissions (UCAS) show that students on Foundation Degrees in 2003-04
will rise substantially: by early October, the number of students accepted for entry to full-time Foundation Degrees had increased
by nearly 80 per cent. compared to the same point last year.
The latest course information on the UCAS website (www.ucas.ac.uk) shows that, for the 2004-05 academic year, there are 2,446
Foundation Degree courses offered in England, of which 191 are offered in the North East. The website lists institutions
individually and does not list courses by type of institution, and nor does it show figures for Tyne and Wear separately. Foundation
Degrees were introduced to respond to sector needs and cover a wide range of courses.

Mr. Challen: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what steps have been taken to improve the recruitment of young
people into electronic engineering since the publication of his Department's Research Report No.112, The Labour Market for
Engineering, Science and IT Graduates: Are there Mismatches Between Supply and Demand? [131114]
Mr. Charles Clarke: My Department is working actively with the DTI and with the industry to address the issues raised. Following the
recent Roberts Review, Government have announced the largest sustained growth in science and engineering expenditure for a decade,
with £1.25 billion extra a year by 2005-06.
We are improving the careers advice available to young people. We are committed to expanding higher and vocational education
provision in order to deliver the skills and qualities that individuals need in the workplace. This includes the establishment of
progression routes for vocational learning from Vocational GCSEs through to Modern Apprenticeships, Foundation Degrees and Graduate
Apprenticeships.
Examples of collaboration between DTI, DfES and the sector includes `Electronics in Schools' to enable more schools to provide the
teaching of electronics within schools, therefore making 11-14 year olds more aware of electronics and the opportunities available,
and the `Shell Technology Enterprise Programme' which provides undergraduates with a placement in the field of electronics on
completion of their degree.
One of the first Sector Skills Council's we have licensed is SEMTA, the Science, Engineering and Technologies Alliance. They will be
the key to our on- going work in identifying and addressing gaps between the supply and demand of suitably qualified people.
