The Government cooperates closely with the Irish Government on the security of the Common Travel Area, with a focus on preventing abuse of free movement by those not entitled to the Common Travel Area’s benefits. Cross-border security is a standing agenda item at the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference, with the next Conference expected later this year.

To ask His Majesty's Government whether unweaned calves born in the UK are transported to Ireland to be exported to EU countries.
To ask His Majesty's Government whether unweaned calves born in the UK are transported to Ireland to be exported to EU countries.
No, there have been no recorded exports of cattle, including unweaned calves, for slaughter or fattening from Great Britain to the EU since 2018. The Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Act 2024 made it an offence to export livestock and horses for slaughter and fattening from Great Britain.
The Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Act 2024 received Royal Assent on 20 May 2024 (prior to the General Election). It makes it an offence to export livestock from or through Great Britain for slaughter outside the British Islands.

My Lords, these draft regulations will amend existing domestic legislation to underpin the UK’s intended ratification of the regular and special regular protocol—I shall refer to it in future as the RSR protocol—to the Interbus agreement.

My Lords, I have a question for the Minister about this generally positive instrument. It is about electronic travel authorisation. If a bus comes from Great Britain to the Republic and into Northern Ireland, electronic travel authorisation will be required, as I read it. Can the Minister confirm this? Many...

My Lords, I thank the Minister for arranging a helpful briefing with his officials this morning. This is, I imagine, one of those very rare occasions where I find myself more in sympathy with the proposal from the Minister than with the speech from the noble Baroness, Lady Randerson, who...

First, I thank noble Lords and the noble Baroness for their contributions. I will attempt to deal, either now or subsequently, with each of their points.
The noble Baroness, Lady Randerson, said that it was good news on the ability to travel to states beyond the European Union and asked whether...

I beg to move amendment 2, page 1, line 16, after “goats,” insert “(da) alpaca,”.
This amendment would add alpacas to the definition of livestock covered by the Bill.

I am grateful for the opportunity to speak from the Opposition Benches on the Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill. We have tabled amendments inspired by Labour’s track record of delivering on animal welfare, from ending the testing of cosmetic products on animals and stopping the cruelty of fur farming to...

The Labour party has long called for a ban on live exports for fattening and slaughter from and through Great Britain. Why does my hon. Friend think the Government have taken so long to bring in this Bill and why does she think they scrapped the Kept Animals Bill?

My hon. Friend makes an excellent point. I am not sure I know the answer to those questions, and I would be grateful if the Minister answered them in his winding-up speech. The delay has been too long, as my hon. Friend says, and for too long animals have continued...

I am proud to support the Bill and the Labour party’s amendments to add deer, alpacas and llamas to the livestock covered by the ban. However, I am conscious that the Government faltered on ending imports of hunting trophies and shied away from cracking down on puppy farming, so how...

My new hon. Friend is quite right: we must ensure that we future-proof the Bill today. I am not convinced at the moment that the Government are completely sympathetic to all our amendments, which I find surprising.
If the Minister is looking for comparable examples, a similar power exists in the...
