We continue to press for progress and for a swift resolution on Mr Johal's case, as discussed by the Foreign Secretary with her Indian counterpart on 4 June. These and other consular matters are raised on an ongoing basis, with no reference to discussions on trade, which are also primarily a matter for the Department for Business and Trade.

The Foreign Secretary has most recently raised Mr Johal's case with her Indian counterparts on several occasions, most recently when visiting India in early June. We continue to make clear to the Government of India that faster progress is needed towards a full resolution of this case, and we will continue to raise it at every appropriate opportunity.

Our High Commission in New Delhi, along with our network of Deputy High Commissions, monitors human rights closely, including issues affecting ethnic and religious communities in Manipur, where there has been significant conflict since 2023. Our diplomatic network in India engages with civil society and faith leaders to support efforts to promote tolerance and respect between communities. We have a broad and deep partnership with the Government of India and are able to discuss a wide range of issues.

I have always been assured by both the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary that the case of my constituent, Jagtar Singh Johal, who has been arbitrarily detained in India for eight and a half years, would continue to be raised at all levels, but I understand that the Foreign Secretary met her counterpart Jaishankar on two occasions recently and was unable to do so. Can I have the Foreign Secretary’s assurance that she remains committed to raising Jagtar’s case and is actively working to secure his release?

The UK condemns all acts of violence targeting religious or ethnic minorities and we have made clear the importance of protecting freedom of religious belief to key stakeholders in Bangladesh.
When I met PM Rahman in February, I discussed the importance of inclusion and protecting minorities, including Hindus, in line with the commitments he made in his victory address to safeguard the rights of all Bangladeshis. In February 2025, the UK's Human Rights Ambassador, Eleanor Sanders, visited Bangladesh and held meetings with the Interim Government to discuss issues of justice, accountability, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
Our commitment to Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) is reflected in our £27 million Bangladesh Collaborative, Accountable and Peaceful Politics programme (2023-2028), which aims to protect civic space, foster inclusive dialogue, and address tensions that can lead to violence.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is aware of reports concerning extrajudicial killings in the Punjab region and continues to monitor the human rights situation closely. The UK Government remains committed to promoting human rights globally, including the right to life and access to justice. Where credible concerns arise, we raise these directly with the Government of India, both through our High Commission in New Delhi and at ministerial level. We also support civil society organisations working to uphold human rights and the rule of law in India. The UK encourages all states to ensure accountability and transparency in law enforcement practices.
