Mr. Sweeney: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is (a) the average sum per pupil and (b) the average percentage of the general schools budget allotted by each local education authority in the current financial year for (i) money allocated to schools via age-weighted pupil units, (ii) premature retirement compensation, (iii) school transport, (iv) statementing and support for statemented pupils and (v) school meals, net of income. [20513] Mr. Jonathan Evans: Local education authorities must allocate at least 80 per cent. of the aggregated schools budget on the basis of pupil numbers. To break down the ASB on the basis of age-weighted pupil units could be done only at disproportionate cost. Mrs. Liddell: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list for each year in which the assisted places scheme has been operating (a) the number of places available, (b) the number taken up, (c) the amount budgeted each year for the scheme and (d) the amount actually spent in Scotland. [12651] Mr. Robertson: Participating schools are not allocated a specific number of assisted places which they may award. Each school is allocated a specific level of fee remission grant within which it may assist such pupils as can be afforded. In addition, schools can reclaim the cost of incidental expenses grants to which assisted pupils are entitled. The table therefore provides information on the number of pupils assisted each year and the actual costs incurred, including the costs of incidental expenses grants. _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Taylor: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the arrangements for salting Manse road, Castlereagh; what account is taken of whether the road is used by school buses in making such arrangements; what was the cost of salting Manse road (a) in 1995-96 and (b) in 1996-97; and if he will make a statement. [8337] Mr. Moss: Responsibility for the subject in question has been delegated to the Roads Service under its chief executive, Mr. W. J. McCoubrey. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given. Letter from G. P. Fraser to Mr. John D. Taylor, dated 11 December 1996: The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has asked the Chief Executive of Roads Service to reply to your question about arrangements for salting Manse Road, Castlereagh. In the Chief Executive's absence I am responding on his behalf. There are 2 Manse Roads in Castlereagh--the C369 which runs from the Four Winds roundabout to the Ballygowan Road, and the U193 which runs from the Clontonacally Road to the Saintfield Road. During periods of ice and snow the C369 is salted along its entire length together with the section of the U193 from Cadger Road to Saintfield Road. The recent review of the gritted network had not effect on either of these roads. While school bus routes are not automatically salted Roads Service applies a weighting factor for buses when assessing the traffic flow on each route. By way of illustration, a 40 seater bus is considered equivalent to 20 cars. The estimated cost of salting these roads was as follows: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Mr. Blunkett: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many national curriculum publications have been sent by her Department to schools in England, in the academic years 1994-95 and 1995-96; if she will list them; which delivery service has been used; and what has been the cost. [8621] Mrs. Gillan: The answer is confined to the national curriculum statutory documents which set out the mandatory programmes of study and attainment targets, since information on other documents bearing on the national curriculum could be assembled only at disproportionate cost. The figures include mailings to higher and further education establishments and local education authorities, as well as to schools, for which separate figures are not available. The great majority of mailings are to schools. All figures are to the nearest thousand. Academic year 1994-95 3,000 documents containing programmes of study and attainment targets for the National Curriculum as it stood before the Dearing review were issued through Christians, a commercial mailing house. The documents were "English in the National Curriculum", "Mathematics in the National Curriculum", "Science in the National Curriculum", "Technology in the National Curriculum", "History in the National Curriculum", "Geography in the National Curriculum", "Modern Foreign Languages in the National Curriculum", "Art in the National Curriculum", "Music in the National Curriculum", and "Physical Education in the National Curriculum". In January and February 1995, a total of 774,000 documents containing programmes of study and attainment targets for the revised national curriculum were issued to all schools, higher and further education establishments and local education authorities in England through Prolog, a commercial mailing house. Up to August 1995 Christians issued a further 149,000. The revised national curriculum documents are "The National Curriculum", (covering all subjects at all key stages), "Key Stages 1 and 2 of the National Curriculum", "English in the National Curriculum", "Mathematics in the National Curriculum", "Science in the National Curriculum", "Design and Technology in the National Curriculum", "Information Technology in the National Curriculum", "History in the National Curriculum", "Geography in the National Curriculum", "Modern Foreign Languages in the National Curriculum", "Art in the National Curriculum", "Music in the National Curriculum", and "Physical Education in the National Curriculum". Invoices for mailing house charges do not correspond exactly to the academic year. From June 1994 to August 1995 they totalled £298,000. The cost of printing revised national curriculum documents was £1,093,000. Academic year 1995-96 Forty-five thousand documents for the revised national curriculum were issued through Christians. The total cost was £61,000 for mailing house charges only.
