St John’s Catholic academy in Kidsgrove is one of the schools that lost out back in 2010 when it should have had a new school building on what are currently two separate sites. When the Minister comes to announce the successful bids for phase 2 of the Priority School Building programme, will he make sure that that Kidsgrove school is included, and will he take account of the substantial subsidence on the older site and make sure that we have a school building fit for education?

We have now received all the bids for the Priority School Building programme 2. We are assessing those and hope to make decisions towards the end of this year. As a consequence of the points that the hon. Lady makes, I will take a particularly close look at the school that she mentions.

The Secretary of State for Education, my right hon. Friend the Member for Surrey Heath (Michael Gove), has long warned of the damaging effects of early entry. In 2011 the Department published its analysis of the impact early entry has on attainment1. Ofsted's subsequent report, published in 2012, noted that while some schools use early entry effectively, others:
‘are using high levels of early entry where there is no, or limited, evidence of positive impact on raising standards.'
Data from summer 2013 GCSE examinations shows that, despite the evidence, the proportion of early entrants is increasing. 23% of maths entries (170,537 entries) and 10% of English entries (70,134) were from students who were not yet at the end of their Key Stage 4 study. Such a high degree of early entry cannot be in the best interests of students, and it is right that we take action as soon as possible.1 Note:

That this House congratulates Endon High School on reaching the final round of the N-Power Climate Cops SOS competition at a time when local community responses to the challenges of climate change are increasingly necessary; fully supports Endon High School's goal of establishing a cycle path along the Stoke-on-Trent to Endon stretch of the disused railway line that is safe for pedestrians and which would link to the Sustrans national cycle network; notes that the day on which Endon High School was finalising its campaign, an announcement was made that the disused railway track has been purchased by Moorlands and City Railways Ltd with a view to reopening the railway line; and urges all local and national partners including Network Rail, Staffordshire County Council, Advantage West Midlands, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Sustrans, North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership, and the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce urgently to back Endon High School by ensuring a feasibility study is jointly undertaken into a cycle and pedestrian track to co-exist with the planned railway line in the interests of sustainable tourism in North Staffordshire.
