Is it not the case that, if the Government are to be truly successful in recruiting more dentists, they will have to increase the number of training places available? Will my hon. Friend look closely at the proposal to build a dental school in Stoke-on-Trent as part of the new provision that is planned for the west midlands?

Ms Walley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimates he has made of the leaving rate of dentists from NHS to private practices in the last three years. [53709] Ms Blears: Very few dentists leave the general dental service (GDS) totally to practice privately. However, dentists in the GDS can vary their level of commitment to the GDS, for example by increasing the amount of their private work. The number of dentists leaving the GDS is shown in the table for the years 1998-99 to 2000-01 for England together with the percentages of the number of dentists at the beginning of the year. The number of leavers covers all reasons for leaving the GDS including retirement from dental work and dentists taking career breaks. These figures are inflated by the transfer of some dentists from the GDS to some personal dental service pilots. Ms Walley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the national average has been in the last five years of the numbers of registrations to NHS dental practices. [36398] Ms Blears: The average number of General Dental Service (GDS) registrations in England during the years 1996-97 to 2000-01 is shown in the table. Registration numbers were reduced by the shortening of the registration period for new registrations from September 1996. For adults the period fell from 24 to 15 months. Children's registrations used to lapse at the end of the following calendar year; they now last for 24 months. This affected registration numbers between December 1997 and August 1998. Data for 1996-97, 1997-98 and 1998-99 are not comparable with later years. Patients who are not registered with a dentist or choose not to register, can obtain treatment on an occasional basis. Ms Walley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on standards of dental health in (a) North Staffordshire, (b) West Midlands and (c) nationally. [14255] Mr. Milburn: One clear measure of the standards of oral health is the incidence of dental caries. The British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry co-ordinates annual surveys of dental caries prevalence in different aged children. The attached tables show the most recent data for the mean number of decayed, missing and filled in deciduous teeth only of five-year-old children, and in the permanent teeth only of twelve and fourteen-year-old children in North Staffordshire, West Midlands and England. Similar data for adults is published every ten years. However, since the most recent data is based on a survey in 1988 and is therefore not particularly up-to-date, it is not presented here. By tradition the acronym for decayed, missing and filled teeth is shown in upper case for permanent teeth-- DMFT--and in lower case for deciduous teeth--dmft.
