The Foreign Secretary has regular discussions with Secretary of State Pompeo on how to resolve the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, most recently on 5 March. We welcome the US commitment to continue talks following the recent summit in Hanoi. We will continue to work closely with the US and our other international partners and use a wide range of diplomatic tools, including through our Embassy in Pyongyang, in an effort to achieve North Korea's denuclearisation.

I speak regularly to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to discuss a range of issues, including nuclear issues, as part of our strong bilateral cooperation on security and defence policy. As I set out in my Chatham House Conference speech on 23 October, the Government remains determined to continue to work with partners across the international community to address threats to our security, to prevent proliferation and where possible to make progress on multilateral nuclear disarmament.

I regularly discuss all aspects of the situation in North Korea with US Secretary of State Tillerson. I have not engaged directly with my North Korean counterpart. We are able to deliver messages directly to the regime through our Embassy in Pyongyang and North Korea's Embassy in London.

I have had no discussions with my US or South Korean counterparts about any proposal to base US nuclear weapons in South Korea. Both the US and South Korean governments have dismissed media reports that plans are being considered to re-introduce US nuclear weapons to South Korea.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action strengthens the international non-proliferation regime and demonstrates that diplomacy can solve difficult international issues. In contrast the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s flagrant violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions has continued - and its missile and nuclear tests accelerated - over recent years, underlining that the actions of the regime are the principal obstacle to meaningful dialogue. We have to continue to build the international pressure on the DPRK regime to change its behaviour and open the way to dialogue.
