That this House notes that for some women the tri-phasic contraceptive pill is the safest and most appropriate pill: further notes that limiting the types of pill available through the Selected List will be a false economy as even a few unplanned pregnancies in every 100 women forced to change brands will wipe out any savings; believes that the development of research into more effective contraception such as nasal sprays and patches will almost certainly be halted if even one type of pill goes onto the Selected List; points out that the seven categories of drugs blacklisted in 1985 have received little research since then with only three new products; understands that in 1973 the principle was established that contraception was a good investment for the NHS, as well as good for women, with studies showing that for every ??1 spent on family planning ??5 was saved that otherwise would be spent on unplanned pregnancies; asks why women should be the victim of the Government's ill-thought out plan to save money; and calls on the Health Secretary to withdraw immediately the threat of the Selected List to the pill.
