That this House is aware that rates of the chronic lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which causes scarring of people's lungs, have increased more than sixfold over the past 40 years, today accounting for the deaths of around 5,000 people a year in the UK; notes that the disease often kills with devastating speed, with more than half of sufferers losing their lives within three years after diagnosis; recognises the outstanding efforts of the British Lung Foundation (BLF) which works tirelessly to raise awareness of this appalling disease and the needs of its sufferers and their carers, who often do not receive the support they need and deserve; and calls on the Government to act on the findings and recommendations of the BLF new patient experience report on this serious illness and develop ways to improve public awareness, medical research and patient treatment, support and care.

That this House is aware that every year in the UK approximately 30,000 cardiac arrests occur outside a hospital environment, 80 per cent of which happen in people's homes, with only one in 10 of recipients surviving to be later discharged from a hospital; commends the British Heart Foundation's National Lifesavers Campaign which aims to train people, especially amongst the young, in life-saving (CPR) skills; and calls on the Government to give this organisation its full support and to take action to encourage schools to include such learning as part of all children's education.

That this House knows that around 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in Britain, with around 50 per cent of these being treated by emergency medical services, with survival rates varying across the UK; understands therefore the importance of the teaching of emergency life support skills which would enable the set of actions required to keep someone alive until such times as professional help arrives; is aware that young people and children are often present at the scenes of accidents and emergencies and if properly trained can be at least as effective as adults in administrating life-saving actions; believes that such skills should be a mandatory part of secondary education in the UK; and calls on the Secretary of State for Education to immediately examine ways in which this could be achieved.

That this House is deeply concerned about planned changes to arrangements for the delivery of the current Nursery Milk Scheme which is likely to affect the numbers of children who drink free milk in school nurseries; is aware that under present arrangements schools, nurseries, parents, staff and suppliers work together to ensure the provision of free school milk to all under five year olds; and commends the work of the organisation Cool Milk to highlight the importance of young children's access to milk, together with other activities aimed at ensuring that any changes to the scheme do not result in fewer children having access to this important sustenance in their classroom.

That this House congratulates Cancer Research UK, Beating Bowel Cancer, Bobby Moore Fund, Bowel Cancer UK, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Breast Cancer Campaign, Breast Cancer Care and Jo's Trust on coming together to celebrate the Screening Matters campaign; notes that screening matters because it saves lives; notes that 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the introduction of breast screening; further notes that breast screening saves an estimated 1,400 women's lives a year in England, that early detection through cervical screening together with treatment can prevent 75 per cent. of cervical cancers from developing and that bowel cancer screening, currently at different stages of being rolled out across the UK, is projected to save at least 20,000 lives over the next 20 years if just 60 per cent. of those eligible undertake the procedure; encourages right hon. and hon.
