Defra does not hold the statistics required to answer this question. Overseas trade commodity data collected by HMRC does not include any details of where products are manufactured, or of any intermediate manufacturing processes.

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many tonnes of fish caught by other member states of the EU in the period 2013 to 2015 were acquired by the UK.
Over the period 2013-2015, the UK imported 700,000 tonnes of fish products worth £2.5 billion from the other EU Member States. Import statistics include fish caught by EU Member States, fish caught in waters outside of the EU but imported into other Member States prior to entering the UK, and fish caught by UK vessels that are landed into and sold in another Member State before import into the UK.
Further information on UK imports of fish products can be found in the Marine Management Organisation’s annual UK Sea Fisheries Statistics publications.

To ask Her Majesty’s Government how many prosecutions have been successful in respect of the illegal sale of imported puppies from Eastern Europe in each of the past five years.
Centrally held records of prosecutions for people who have breached the law on the selling of pet animals do not include details of the origin of the animals involved. The Government has published guidance for buyers on the GOV.UK website. This includes a recommendation that those buying a puppy should ask to see it with its mother and in its natural environment. If anyone suspects that a seller of an imported dog or puppy is claiming that it was bred in the United Kingdom then they should contact trading standards in their local authority. We also advise prospective buyers that if the dog in question is born outside the UK to check the pet passport or veterinary certificate and that it is vaccinated against rabies and treated for tapeworm.

All dogs imported from European Union Member States are required to have a valid rabies vaccination, be treated against tapeworm and have a valid pet passport which gives details of both the vaccine and the veterinarian who administered it. Dogs and cats imported from outside the EU go through a similar process but the health preparation requirements and certification documents differ according to the disease status in the country concerned.
In 2013 the CVO working group confirmed that rescue dogs were being incorrectly imported under the Pet Travel Scheme. In 2014 APHA worked with charities who import rescue dogs to ensure that they were imported under commercial rules.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what steps they are taking to prevent the sale of imported puppies from Eastern Europe which (1) have not been vaccinated, and (2) have been passed off by the sellers as bred in the UK.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what steps they are taking to prevent the sale of imported puppies from Eastern Europe which (1) have not been vaccinated, and (2) have been passed off by the sellers as bred in the UK.
All dogs imported from other European Union Member States are required to have a valid rabies vaccination and a pet passport which gives details of both the vaccine and the veterinarian who administered it. Prior to embarkation, dogs are examined by an Official Veterinarian in the country concerned who must certify that the animal is fit to travel. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) also carry out checks on imported dogs and puppies, including those that have been imported for sale. As part of these checks, APHA must ensure that the dogs and puppies have had the appropriate rabies vaccination. Dogs and cats imported from third countries go through a similar process but the health preparation requirements and certification documents may differ according to the disease status in the country concerned.
It is important that those buying a puppy know where it comes from and where it was born. The Government has published guidance for buyers on the GOV.UK website. This includes a recommendation that those buying a puppy should ask to see it with its mother and the rest of the litter. If anyone suspects that a seller of an imported dog or puppy is claiming that it was bred in the United Kingdom then they should contact trading standards in their local authority.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the efficacy of the three-day interval between the notification and arrival of forest reproductive material in preventing damage to, or infection of, existing forestry.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the efficacy of the three-day interval between the notification and arrival of forest reproductive material in preventing damage to, or infection of, existing forestry.
The Forest Reproductive Material (Great Britain) Regulations 2002 regulate the marketing of forest reproductive material (FRM). There is no notification period for the introduction of FRM so no such assessment has been carried out.
The Plant and Tree Notification System requirements relates to the movement of certain tree species from other EU member states and extends to oak, plane, sweet chestnut, pine, elm, prunus and ash trees (although no movements of ash trees are permitted at present, due to ash dieback restrictions).
The scheme is intended to help the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate build intelligence about particular trades, particularly those where there is a risk of introducing harmful organisms, and to help arrange targeted inspections of such trees. The information is also valuable in the event of an outbreak, to facilitate tracing of trees which may be implicated, and to help inform the development of Defra policy. The scheme is not restricted to trees intended for forestry purposes.
Notification of importation of plants and trees should be before or within 5 days of the arrival of the consignment, detailing the planned destination in England or Wales.

To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether the Food Standards Agency plays any part in the condemnation of food carried on heavy goods vehicles that are found to have carried unauthorised persons in the trailers.
The Food Standards Agency receives notifications from the Border Force of potential contaminated food carried by goods vehicles and notifies the food business operator via their local authority. Under food law, in cases where contamination has potentially taken place, the decision as to whether foodstuffs are fit for consumption lies with the business operator, which is responsible for ensuring that any foodstuffs it places on the market are compliant with all relevant food safety and food hygiene legislation.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether statistics on the nature and value of food condemned because of contamination by unauthorised persons travelling on the importing vehicle are gathered by any government department or agency.

Statistics on the nature and value of food condemned are not gathered by any Government department or agency.
