That this House welcomes the decision by a Santiago court that former Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet, is to stand trial for atrocities committed during his 17-year regime in Chile; resents his countless efforts to plead ill health when faced with each legal hurdle in the campaign to bring him to justice; and congratulates all those surviving victims and campaigners who continue to work toward ensuring that he is tried for crimes committed during Operation Condor, a conspiracy of the 1970's South American dictatorships to kill opponents and bury their bodies in each other's countries, including the torture of 27,000 people and the killing of some 3,000 political activists from 1973 to 1990.

That this House notes that 11th September is the 30th anniversary of the barbaric coup undertaken by General Pinochet against the elected government of Chile under President Salvador Allende, which led to his death when the Presidential Palace was attacked by Chilean jets and which subsequently led to the deaths of thousands of left-wing and other activists, as well as widespread torture and disappearances; notes with regret that Chilean action was assisted in this crime against humanity by US President Nixon whose administration did its utmost to make the economy scream and ferment instability and whose National Security Adviser, Henry Kissinger, notoriously said that he didn't see why the US should stand aside and see a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people; welcomes the comments by US Secretary of State Colin Powell on 20th February, that what happened with Mr Allende is not a part of American history that we're proud of; and calls upon President Bush to amplify the comments of Colin Powell and apologise for the disgraceful actions of the US in Chile in 1970 to 1973.

That this House notes that on 11th September 1973 the elected government of Chile was overthrown by a military coup and President Allende died in the Moreda Palace; recalls that the coup led by General Pinochet began with strafing of the centre of Santiago by British-built planes and continued with the murder and disappearance of over 7000 people; and regrets that General Pinochet has escaped prosecution and that many victims and their families still await justice for the reign of terror installed with the help of the CIA.

That this House notes that 11th September is the thirtieth anniversary of the CIA-backed coup in Chile which deposed the democratically-elected President Salvador Allende, resulting in his death and the murder and disappearance of thousands more; and further notes that this anniversary provides a timely reminder of the potentially pernicious influence of extreme right wing elements in American foreign policy.

That this House is appalled that Augusto Pinochet, dictator of Chile from 1973 to 1990, is due to be sworn in as Senator for Life; recalls his horrific regime during which the elected President Salvador Allende was murdered as were thousands of his supporters and that many more were forced into exile; sympathises with the many Chilean people who lost loved ones and want to find out the truth; and wishes the peaceful demonstrations for human rights on 11th March well.
