Dr. Iddon: To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office how much the Government are spending in the financial year 2001-02 on misuse
of drugs across all its Departments and agencies. [159114]
Marjorie Mowlam: The Government have made available substantial resources for directly tackling the problem of drug misuse. These
are planned to increase from £700 million in 2000-01 to over £1 billion in 2003-04.
Details for 2001-02 are set out in the tables.

Dr. Iddon: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will take steps to ensure that community drug teams and drug dependency

Ms Stuart: We have set up a new national treatment agency to set standards for the provision of drug treatment services in England.
The performance of local agencies will be monitored against these standards, and we expect that contingency planning for variations
in demand would be one measurement of their efficiency.

Dr. Iddon: To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office what recent meetings she has had with her counterparts in other countries on
anti-drugs initiatives. [153310]
Marjorie Mowlam: One of the four key aims of the Government's drugs strategy is to reduce the availability of Class A drugs in the
UK.
Progress is being achieved through co-ordinated interdepartmental activity on agreed priorities, resulting in increased seizures of
heroin and cocaine en-route to the UK and increased disruption of criminal groups involved in trafficking.
The UK is also active in international forums, including the UN, G8 and EU, aimed at strengthening the global framework for tackling
the illicit drugs trade.

Dr. Iddon: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will introduce a national strategy for substance misuse in place of
separate strategies for alcohol, drug and tobacco misuse. [152666]
Ms Stuart: Although there are some significant similarities between treatment and prevention strategies for alcohol, drugs and
tobacco, there are also very significant differences in terms of the mortality and morbidity associated with each and their impact
on society. We believe therefore that it is more effective to have separate strategies to tackle each under the umbrella of the
Government's overarching goals of combating social exclusion, reducing health inequalities and tackling criminality.

Dr. Iddon: To ask the Secretary of State for Health when the consultation document on a national strategy for alcohol abuse will be
published. [152665]
Ms Stuart: We remain committed to the publication of a cross-Government strategy to tackle alcohol misuse, and we are working with
key stakeholders across Government, the alcohol field and the alcohol industry to ensure that this commitment is delivered.
The NHS Plan, published in July 2000, said that the Department would be implementing the strategy by 2004. The Department expects to
publish a consultation paper in due course.
