That this House endorses the key objective of the School Teachers' Review Body in its Report of May 2002, namely the reduction of teachers' workload in order to restore morale, improve teacher retention and supply and make possible further improvements in standards; and calls on the Government in consultation with the representatives of the teachers and employers to take swift action and to allocate sufficient funds to achieve these objectives, beginning with the removal from teachers of tasks which are unconnected with teaching and learning.

That this House expresses astonishment at the remarks by Mr Murdo Fraser MSP, the Deputy Education Spokesperson for the Tory Party in Scotland, on BBC Scotland Television on 17th May, in which he expressed support for the sect known as, creationists, running state schools in Scotland; notes that members of this sect totally reject evolution; believes that creationists have nothing to do with great religious faiths in Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the wider world; further notes that creationists have taken control of a state-funded secondary school in Gateshead, where they are undermining the teaching of science; rejects the foolish position of the Tory Party in Scotland, which seems now to be not only against devolution but also evolution; and asserts that the misguided creationist sect should not be placed in charge of children's education in Scotland or anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

That this House opposes the increase in segregated faith schools as outlined in the Education White Paper, Schools achieving success; notes that the White Paper says that church and other faith schools must be inclusive but that schools with a particular religious ethos cannot by their very nature be inclusive, because there is discrimination through selection with those of a particular faith being favoured over children who are not of that faith or indeed are atheist, that religious schools choose their children rather than the other way around, that an increase in religious schools may lead to less integration of communities, causing division; and being taught in a religious school is not necessarily a sound basis for living in a multi-cultural society; and further notes that events in Northern Ireland and also in Bradford indicate that we should be working for the greater integration rather than the division of our schools.
