To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, what recent steps he has taken to ensure that new trade deals do not undermine the UK's existing (a) social and (b) environmental standards after the UK leaves the EU.
The UK has long supported the promotion of our values globally and this will continue as we leave the EU.
When we leave the European Union, we will maintain our current standards. We will keep our existing UK legislation, and the EU Withdrawal Act will convert EU law into UK law as it applies at the moment of exit.
We’re clear that more trade doesn’t have to come at the expense of labour or the environment. We are exploring all options in the design of future bilateral trade and investment agreements, including possible labour and environmental provisions within these taking into account results of the DIT consultation exercise.

We are currently reviewing our trade and investment policy and are considering a wide range of options in the design of future bilateral trade and investment agreements. We have completed four online public consultations on potential future trade agreement negotiations with the USA, Australia, New Zealand and on the UK Government potentially seeking accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). We are now considering the responses.
The UK has over 90 existing bilateral investment agreements in place with other countries, many of which have been in force for several decades. The right to regulate is recognised under international law and bilateral investment treaties and agreements do not seek to undermine this. There has never been a successful investor-state dispute settlement claim brought against the UK. The threat of potential claims against the UK has not affected the Government’s legislative programme or prevented the Government from regulating in the pursuit of legitimate public policy objectives, including health, environment and human rights.

The UK has long supported the promotion of our values globally and this will continue as we leave the EU. We’re clear that more trade doesn’t have to come at the expense of workers. The Prime Minister has indicated that we will protect existing workers’ rights and build on them when the time is right for the United Kingdom.
The UK is committed to promoting the economic empowerment of women and recognises trade as an important lever for equality. As the UK establishes an independent trade policy, the Government will take a gender-responsive approach to trade and create a framework that delivers for women as employees and business leaders.
When we bring forward legislative proposals to implement new trade deals, Parliament will have the opportunity to scrutinise this new legislation in the normal way.

From reading the amendment, I am slightly confused. Perhaps the hon. Lady is about to develop this point, but what is the difference between compulsion and PSHE being mandatory, which is not mentioned in the amendment, and a ““statutory entitlement””, which is?
