My Lords, can the Minister update us on the coalition of the willing in terms of the final settlement that there will be on any peace agreement in Ukraine? Does she accept that the coalition of the willing will form the basis of European defence in the future if we...

My Lords, the noble Baroness, Lady Kennedy, has stated that the Iranians do not want outside interference to achieve regime change, but, without outside interference, how will the regime be changed?

Can the Minister confirm that the British Government did not recognise the presidency of Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela and that, if it were not for the American action, he would still be there, brutalising his people and debauching the economy of a potentially very rich country?

Can the Minister confirm the reports in the paper today that the Government will be anxious to secure a trade deal with the US as quickly as possible? Can he further confirm that that would not be possible if we were still members of the EU? What will happen with the talks that have been pushed on with the European Union? Is there not a danger that one will conflict with the other and that it will not be possible to have a trade deal with the US and the EU at the same time?

My Lords, my noble friend has pointed out that reservations about this treaty were expressed by the Obama presidency, long before President Trump was elected. Surely if one side breaks a treaty, it is time to abandon it altogether. On the point that the noble Lord, Lord Collins, made about...

My Lords, my noble friend mentioned China. Does he accept that the cutting of exports from China to North Korea by

anything between 70% and 90% had an enormous effect on bringing these talks to pass? Does he feel that the Chinese will resume those sanctions if progress is not...

My Lords, I too congratulate the noble Earl, Lord Cork and Orrery, on his maiden speech. He complains that this place is very difficult to find one’s way around, being something of a rabbit warren. I have very bad news for him: they are going to spend billions of pounds...

My Lords, perhaps I, too, may crave the indulgence of the Committee to make a short contribution in the gap. I was disappointed by the answer to my intervention on the noble Lord, Lord Foulkes, who suggested that it was not the responsibility of his committee to make any recommendations...

I am grateful to the noble Lord for giving way and apologise for arriving late. Does he think that there is a role for a Secretary of State for homeland security who would have responsibility for all the agencies?

I shall speak also to Amendment 2 in my name in this group. First, I declare an interest as a director of an investment trust which is regulated by the FSA. The main point of these amendments is to discuss the whole question of being too big to fail. That...

My Lords, I will pick up the remarks made by the noble Lord, Lord Whitty, about the FSA. It is rather remarkable that we are asked to stand here and say that the FSA is the most magnificent organisation and should be left in place. It seems quite obvious that...

I support my noble friend on her two amendments, but I must confess that I support her with rather more enthusiasm on Amendment 10 than on Amendment 9. It must be absolutely right to make sure that any consultation that takes place is published, because we all believe in transparency...

I should make my position clear. I do not think that my noble friend’s amendment goes far enough, because it leaves the Treasury with a veto on who is asked to get involved in this consultation. I do not accept that a complete repository of wisdom is held on all...

I thank all noble Lords who have contributed to what has been an interesting debate. I do not accept the premise of the Minister that somehow this is all going to emerge from these constant reports that have been coming out of the Bank of England and the FSA and...

That is precisely the point of having a report that would look into all these issues. I do not know why we have to answer them all here now. It did not matter how big or small the Dunfermline Building Society was. It had a very amount number of depositors’...
