That this House notes that on 11th September 1973 the elected government of Chile was overthrown by a military coup and President Allende died in the Moreda Palace; recalls that the coup led by General Pinochet began with strafing of the centre of Santiago by British-built planes and continued with the murder and disappearance of over 7000 people; and regrets that General Pinochet has escaped prosecution and that many victims and their families still await justice for the reign of terror installed with the help of the CIA.

That this House notes that 11th September is the thirtieth anniversary of the CIA-backed coup in Chile which deposed the democratically-elected President Salvador Allende, resulting in his death and the murder and disappearance of thousands more; and further notes that this anniversary provides a timely reminder of the potentially pernicious influence of extreme right wing elements in American foreign policy.
