That this House views with the utmost concern the doubling of the diagnoses of primary or secondary malnutrition in Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the years 2010 to 2013 compared to the years 2008 to 2010; believes that this is as a direct result of the poverty and lack of employment in the city caused by the Government’s unrelenting austerity programme; notes the increase of food banks on Bradford and other major cities; further notes the repeated attacks on benefits and the stigmatisation of those claiming them; and calls on the Government to ensure that this shameful statistic of poverty is eradicated through the immediate halting of benefit cuts, the pegging of energy prices, the introduction of the living wage nationally and investment in an emergency job creation programme to bring work to a city with some of the highest rates of unemployment in the UK.

That this House pays tribute to the services provided by the tenants of Rawson and Kirkgate markets in Bradford; notes that the markets are extremely well patronised, provide a wide range of price and choice for customers and is therefore appalled by suggestions from the Government that local authority provision of such markets should be abandoned allowing any markets to be established at whim; expresses grave concern that such a policy would result in trading in both shoddy and stolen goods, difficulties in enforcing adequate standards of hygiene, welfare and service facilities and endanger the livelihoods of hard working market traders; and calls upon the Government to abandon this latest attempt to foist nutty, free market ideas on an unwilling public.

That this House notes that, shortly after this Government rubber stamped approval for the second hospital trust in Bradford, the trust announced closure proposals for Westwood Hospital for mentally handicapped people which will involve dumping patients into varying degrees of community care in order to sell of the land for residential development from this tranquil, sheltered site which should be the basis for a village community for the mentally handicapped; and recognises that instead patients will be treated like pawns by a group of trust managers who put profit and puffed up salaries before patients whilst riding rough-shod over the wishes of relatives and patients alike in an act of betrayal towards the mentally handicapped, one of the most vulnerable sections of the community.

That this House congratulates the Bradford Playhouse and Film Theatre on providing cinema programmes of great merit and distinction for more than fifty years; notes that the two screens give a wide choice to the discriminating film-goer, and therefore views with alarm the proposal by the British Film Institute to withdraw funding and transfer support to a single screen library cinema not yet completed and controlled by the Photographic Museum; rejects this example of cultural imperialism created by a conspiratorial arrangement between the British Film Institute and the trustees of the Museum of Film Photography and Television; and calls on the British Film Institute to retain support for an independent Bradford body which has an excellent record of artistic screen endeavour and which is owned, controlled and cherished by people of Bradford.
