Mr. Evans: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales when his Department introduced a scheme to fund the teaching of Welsh in
Patagonia. [20126]
Mr. Hain: It was announced in August 1996 that the Welsh Office would contribute towards a joint project with the British Council to
help strengthen the language and cultural links between Wales and Patagonia. The project, which was intended to be of three years'
duration, subject to satisfactory progress in the first year, commenced in April 1997. My right hon. Friend has recently agreed to
the continuation of the project into its second year.
