I am placing four tables in the House of Commons Library, as follows.
Table A shows the annual changes in the numbers of employee jobs by industry sector and region in Great Britain, for the years 2002
and 2003. The data comes from surveys of employers that provide the most up-to-date source of national and regional information.
However, no information is available from them for areas below regional level.
Table B shows the annual changes in the numbers of employee jobs by industry sector and local authority areas in Great Britain
during 2002. This data comes from the Annual Business Inquiry (ABI), which provides information below regional level. However, the
equivalent changes for 2003 are not yet available.
Table C shows the available information about changes in private sector jobs by industry sector in the year ending June 2003, for
the United Kingdom as a whole. This information is compiled annually using a special analysis of the employer survey data.
Information is not available for all industry sectors, or by region.
Table, D shows changes in numbers of self-employed people by industry, region and local authority area for the United Kingdom as a
whole in the year ending February 2003. This information is obtained using local area data from the Labour Force Survey, which is a
survey of people in households across the UK.

Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to reply.

As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your recent parliamentary question on the
self-employed.
The data requested is set out in the attached tables and relates to Labour Force Survey estimates based on people who reported that
they were self-employed in their main job.

labour force since 1990, identifying separately (a) employees in employment, (b) armed forces and (c) self-employment, with a
breakdown of these categories by (i) full-time and part-time and (ii) sex. [62308]

asked him to reply.
Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Mike Hancock, dated 10 December 1998:
As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your recent parliamentary question on the
labour force.
The statistics you have requested (where available) can be accessed via the Central Shared Database (CSDB) in the House of Commons
Library.
Figures for males and females are available for Employee jobs (the new name for employees-in-employment), Self-employment jobs and
HM Forces in the United Kingdom. However, a full-time and part-time breakdown is only available for the Employee jobs component, and
only from December 1992.
When accessing the database you will need to know the CSDB `identifiers' for each of the series of figures sought. These are as
follows:
Male Full-time Employee jobs: YEJN
Male Part-time Employee jobs: YEJO
Female Full-time Employee jobs: YEJP
Female Part-time Employee jobs: YEJQ
Male Self-employment jobs: YEJR
Female Self-employment jobs: YEJS

These estimates are subject to revision after 16{th} December 1998, when the short-term estimates will be benchmarked against the
Annual Employment Survey (AES) results for September 1997. You may also wish to know that these figures are published in table B.11
of Labour Market Trends each month--copies of which are placed in the House Library.

As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your parliamentary question on hairdressers
in the labour market.
Information from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) shows that there were 185,000 employees and self-employed in hairdressing and other
beauty treatment in the United Kingdom at Spring 1982, and 174,000 at Summer 1997. Both of these totals represent 0.7 per cent. of
the total number of employees and self-employed.
Comparison over a long time period can be made by focusing on the number of employees only. Figures from the employer surveys show
that the proportion of employees in hairdressing and other beauty treatment in Great Britain has stayed constant at 0.4 per cent.
between June 1978 (the closest available to the 1979 date requested) and September 1996.

Letter from Tim Holt to Mrs. Bridget Prentice, dated 12 November 1996:
The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to reply as the Director of the Office for National Statistics to your recent question
on the proportion of the population who are self-employed in the South East.
The Labour Force Survey (LFS) covers the population in private households plus persons in NHS accommodation and students in halls of
residence. The mid-year population estimates additionally cover the rest of the non-household population. It is therefore more
appropriate to calculate the proportions who are self employed using LFS estimates. This information can be accessed through the
NOMIS database by the House of Common Library.
Mid-year population estimates taken from the Census of Population are published in Monitor--Population and Health. A copy of this
publication is also available from the House of Commons Library.
