Electricity network operators are obliged to maintain a Priority Services Register to ensure support is given to the most vulnerable customers during power disruptions. Customers who would be vulnerable during a power cut, such as children who are medically dependent on electricity, should be signed up for the Priority Services Register directly with their Energy Supplier or Distribution Network Operator. Those who require a continuous supply of electricity for medical reasons and would need medical support during a power cut, should seek advice from their medical equipment provider and local health service provider.

Since Life Sciences Vision publication, the Government has made some significant progress in improving standards for medical technologies (MedTech). The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has been actively engaging with industry to implement the future Medical Device Regulations. On 25 October, MHRA published an implementation plan to support the MedTech sector through the changes. The current standstill period will be extended by 12 months to July 2024. The final legislation will introduce transitional arrangements and be accompanied by guidance to support industry. MHRA is working towards designating more UK Approved Bodies.

The Government understands that some households with a disability or medical condition will have higher energy costs than average. Certain specialised NHS England services do provide rebates on energy costs for patients using medical equipment at home, such as home oxygen concentrators or adult home dialysis. These arrangements are unique to the contracts or service specifications of these conditions. Clinical Commissioning Groups are best placed to support their local populace.
On 26 May, as part of an additional £15 billion package of cost-of-living support, it was announced that the six million people who receive disability allowance will get a payment of £150 to assist with rising energy prices. Additionally, households will get £400 of support with their energy bills through an expansion of the Energy Bills Support Scheme.

£5,009m has been allocated to successful Medicines and Diagnostics Manufacturing Transformation Fund (MDMTF) projects to date. These allocations have no impact on the Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund resource. Applicants from the one-year MDMTF can also apply to the successor fund if the application is for a different project.

The Government is committed to ensuring fair energy prices for consumers. The Government introduced the Domestic Gas and Electricity (Tariff Cap) Act, which requires the energy regulator Ofgem to cap standard variable and default energy tariffs in 2019. The Energy Price Cap will remain in place at least till the end of 2022 to protect millions of customers and ensure they pay a fair price for their energy.

The Bioscience and health technology sector statistics 2019 shows that in 2019, 3,300 people were employed in businesses primarily involved in the development of anaesthetic and respiratory technology, which includes the production of inhalers. These businesses generated £780m in turnover.
