Mr. Bruce George: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what funding has been made available to the Borough of Walsall by his Department since June 1997. [160995] Yvette Cooper: Detailed information on the impact of Department of Health policies nationally is set out in the Department of Health Annual reports. A copy of the most recent report "Department of Health--Government Expenditure Plans 2000-01" is available in the Library and on the Department of Health website at www.doh.gov.uk/dhreport. My hon. Friend's question relates to the geographical area covered by Walsall health authority and Walsall social services authority. Walsall health authority general allocations on behalf of its resident population for 2001-02 compared with 1997-98 is set out in the table. Increases in allocations between 1997-98 and 2001-02 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. This includes: £0.7 million for accident and emergency modernisation; £0.37 million allocated since 1997 for specific cancer services (breast, colorectal and lung cancer services and cancer outpatient services) as well as £0.11 million allocated for cancer equipment; £3.43 million to deliver improvements in inpatient waiting lists and outpatient waiting times; £0.67 million for Booked Admissions Projects; £0.71 million to expand critical care services in 2000-01; £0.75 million winter pressures in 2000-01; £0.11 million for heart disease services 2000-01; £0.03 million from Investing in Dentistry; £0.18 million Health Action Zone moneys for smoking cessation. Walsall is the lead health authority for the proposed £43 million "5{th} wave" scheme at Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust and Walsall Community Health NHS Trust--work to develop this scheme is due to begin in 2002. Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust has also received £0.5 million from the Local Capital Modernisation Fund for new hospital equipment and other projects proposed by clinical teams. Mr. Greenway: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the funding programmes for social inclusion for which his Department is responsible that can be accessed by (a) national sports bodies and (b) local clubs and communities. [161008] Yvette Cooper: Funding can be accessed from the Department through the following routes: (1) Health Action Zones (HAZs) are multi-agency partnerships between the National Health Service, local authorities (including social services), the voluntary and business sectors and local communities. Their aim is to tackle inequalities in health in the most deprived areas of the country through health and social care modernisation programmes. As well as tackling key priorities such as coronary heart disease, cancer and mental health, and issues such as teenage pregnancy and smoking cessation, they are addressing other interdependent and wider determinants of health, such as housing, education and employment, and linking with other initiatives. As part of their local involvement programmes, many HAZs run "Community Chest" schemes where they invite applications from the local community to bid for funds for specific local projects. (2) The National Service Framework for coronary heart disease and health improvement programmes enable health authorities to work with local health economies on the development of local programmes on smoking, healthy eating, physical activity, overweight and obesity. These programmes will be accessible to national sport bodies, local clubs and communities. One element of local plans to promote physical activity may be exercise referral schemes. These schemes involve a general practitioner or practice nurse referring a patient to facilities such as leisure centres or gyms for a supervised exercise programme. (3) Section 64 grants provide money to voluntary organisations running projects connected to public health and social care.

Mr. Todd: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what guidance he has given to health authorities on their allocation of resources to individual medical specialties. [160263] Mr. Denham: To enable health authorities to manage flexibly the totality of resources available to them, there is limited earmarking of funds within allocations. For 2001-02 the national health service plan implementation programme identified the following sums included in allocations with an intention that they be spent on the purpose for which they were allocated: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Priority £ million Cancer and coronary heart disease 450 Waiting times and access 423 Intermediate care and community equipment 188 Information management and technology 113 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. These sums reflect national estimates of investment needed to deliver targets and milestones in implementing the NHS plan. They are intended as a guide for local health communities in ensuring that their own plans will meet these targets and milestones. A copy of the NHS plan implementation programme will be placed in the Library.

[159920] Mr. Hutton: Modernisation money allocated to South Cheshire health authority for adult, adolescent and child mental health services for the years 1999-2000 and 2000-01 is shown in the table. These figures do not include funding made available to local providers of mental health services by the health authority from their general allocation. The figures also exclude allocations to local authorities for mental health services for the residents of South Cheshire. Funding details for South Cheshire health authority are not yet available for the year 2001-02.
