To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether her Department is taking steps to encourage young people aged 16 and over to consider a career as an air traffic controller; and what discussions she has had with the aviation sector on increasing awareness of air traffic control careers among...
The Department for Transport is committed to encouraging, inspiring, and creating opportunities for young people to pursue careers in the aviation sector, including as air traffic controllers, through its Generation Aviation Programme.
The Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund, a key workstream of the Generation Aviation Programme, funds outreach programmes and events that inspire school and college students to explore careers in aviation, including opportunities to become air traffic controllers.
This year’s Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund will focus on supporting school leavers aged 16 and above by providing practical assistance to help overcome barriers to aviation employment and training. This includes improving access to careers such as air traffic control and enhancing diversity across the sector.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps she plans to take to help increase awareness of careers in the maritime sector.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps she plans to take to help increase awareness of careers in the maritime sector.
The Department continues to support industry to improve the awareness of careers in the maritime sector though the implementation of the Ratings Review and the Cadet Review, both of which were undertaken by the Maritime Skills Commission. The Cadet Review is being delivered through the Cadet Training & Modernisation programme and promoting seafaring career pathways is an important part of that work. A new maritime strategy is in development, which will include a focus on maritime careers.
Additionally, the Department continues to work with stakeholders, such as Maritime UK, on careers promotion and has supported Maritime UK’s Maritime Roadshow for Girls, which promotes STEM and maritime careers in schools. Officials are also working with Maritime UK’s Careers Taskforce, which coordinates careers outreach activity across the sector.

To date, there have not been any meetings with the SoS for Work and Pensions on this topic.
Individual bus operators are required to ensure they have sufficient staff in order to run their scheduled services. To this end, we expect the bus sector to pursue all opportunities to encourage job seekers into the industry, including working with local job centres

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether his Department has plans to provide incentives for careers at sea for young people; and if he will make a statement.
Our seafarers are highly skilled professionals entering STEM related careers and the Department is keen to see more young people entering the industry and taking advantage of the many and wide ranging career opportunities that the maritime sector offers.
Government incentivises careers at sea by supporting approximately 30% - 50% of the cost of Seafarer Training through the Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) scheme. To create further training opportunities, SMarT Plus was announced earlier this year which will see SMarT funding doubled to £30m over the next seven years and training places increased to 1200 per year. In addition to SMarT, a continual supply of training opportunities are made available through the UK’s tonnage tax regime which requires a tonnage tax company to recruit and train one trainee officer (or ratings equivalent) for every 15 officer posts in its fleet.
As apprenticeships policy is devolved, the Department continues to support the sector in developing maritime apprenticeships in England, opening opportunities for careers at sea to all. There are currently 3 seafaring apprenticeships available for use with the levy. The Department also continues to support a number of initiatives promoting careers at sea to young people, including Seafarers Awareness Week, Maritime UK’s Maritime Careers Forum, the Women in Maritime Taskforce and the Year of Engineering.
As my right hon. Friend will know, 2018 is the Year of Engineering. As my local contribution to that, I am organising an engineering showcase in Basildon town centre on 14 July. Will he encourage other Members to consider doing a similar thing in their own constituency? May I also invite him to come and join us to celebrate all the fantastic engineering going on in Basildon?
As my right hon. Friend will know, 2018 is the Year of Engineering. As my local contribution to that, I am organising an engineering showcase in Basildon town centre on 14 July. Will he encourage other Members to consider doing a similar thing in their own constituency? May I also invite him to come and join us to celebrate all the fantastic engineering going on in Basildon?

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what plans they have to support Women in Rail and to promote the rail industry as an attractive career choice for women.
The Department for Transport works closely with Women in Rail. Most recently I invited them to take part in a celebration of the National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June.
The Rail Supply Group, which is supported by both the Department for Transport and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, is developing a strategy this year for strengthening the UK rail supply chain including by ensuring it attracts the very best UK talent. To inform this work, Women in Rail is running a survey to establish the rail industry’s male to female ratio, with a view to promoting the rail industry as the home of many fantastic career opportunities for both men and women.
Recent rail franchise competitions have encouraged bidders to set out plans for promoting diversity and equality across the workforce and attracting and recruiting people who are new to the rail industry, particularly from under-represented groups.
