To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, how much support the British Business Bank has provided to small and medium-sized enterprises in Bradford since its creation.
Since it became a plc in October 2014, British Business Bank programmes, excluding the Start-Up Loans scheme, have supported £1.2m of finance to small and medium sized enterprises in Bradford. Since the Start-Up Loans scheme began in September 2012 it has delivered over £1m worth of finance in Bradford.
The top 10 sectors supported by British Business Bank programmes in Bradford, Yorkshire and the Humber are as listed in the tables in the attached document.

The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) collects and publishes data on students enrolled at UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
The Table shows the proportion of students from Bradford Local Authority area and the UK overall who started a full-time first degree course at a UK Higher Education Institution in the academic years 2008/09 to 2013/14 and who declared that their parents did not hold a higher education qualification. Comparable information is not available for the earlier years.
Information for the 2014/15 academic year will become available from the Higher Education Statistics Agency in January 2016.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) publishes young participation rates by Parliamentary Constituency. These show the proportion of young people in each parliamentary constituency who entered higher education by the age of 19, for each cohort of 18 year olds between 1998 and 2011. These can be viewed at the following link:

Amazingly, data on start-ups is not available for years before 2008. The estimated number of business start-ups in a) the Bradford East constituency and b) Bradford local authority from 2008 and 2014 are shown in the table below.

Member for Manchester, Withington (Mr Leech), and given the importance that this Government have placed on science, is it the Department’s intention to play an important role, in conjunction with Ministers from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, in securing the future of the three northern museums in the Science Museum Group, particularly the National Media museum in Bradford, which is crucial to the local economy in the Bradford district?

We understand the importance of those museums. They are the responsibility of DCMS, and that Department is well aware of the significant role that they play, particularly in attracting young people and getting them interested in science and technology.

The Bradford City Centre Growth zone has received a £17.6 million grant from the Regional Growth Fund. The Leeds city region local enterprise partnership (LEP), which covers Bradford, also received £15 million from RGF to support its Business Growth Programme.
Final data for the 2011/12 academic year show that there were 4,950 apprenticeship starts in Bradford local education authority, up by 7.2% on 2010/11 and 82.0% on 2009/10.
Bradford is supported by a range of other Government growth initiatives. The Leeds city region LEP brings business and civic leaders together to drive sustainable economic growth and create the conditions for private sector job growth. The LEP made a successful bid for a city deal which aims to give cities the powers and tools they need to drive local economic growth.
