The recommendations made in the Social Market Foundation’s report published on 7 November 2016 were addressed during a Westminster Hall debate on Sovereign Wealth Funds in the House of Commons on 14 December 2016.
The government’s priority is to reduce the deficit and reduce the UK’s debt as a share of national income. Therefore, the government does not currently intend to give detailed consideration to a Sovereign Wealth Fund.

On 24 February 2016, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published a new best practice guideline on the assessment and management of motor neurone disease (MND). The guideline sets out the signs and symptoms of the disease and makes a range of recommendations, including that robust protocols and pathways are in place to inform healthcare professionals about MND and how it may present and to inform healthcare professionals in all settings about local referral arrangements. Childhood Obesity data is collected annually through the Health Survey for England (HSE) and the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP).

The HSE data (which covers the period from 2000-14) shows that the obesity level has varied between 13.7 and 18.9% with variations annually but no discernible overall downward or upward trend.

Commissioners to the Independent Reporting Commission have been appointed by the UK Government, the Government of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Executive. They will begin their preparatory work in January 2017. The Commission will become fully operational when the Treaty signed in September between the UK Government and the Government of Ireland, and supporting legislation in Ireland, is in place. The UK Government is providing up to £3 million over four years under the Fresh Start Agreement to establish and run the Commission. It is anticipated that the Commission will comprise up to four support staff.

The Government of Indonesia has confirmed that Governor Purnama will be prosecuted in accordance with Indonesian law. The UK Government remains a keen supporter of human rights in Indonesia, and it will be important that Governor Purnama’s trial is conducted to international standards and that his rights are respected in accordance with the rule of law. Our Embassy in Jakarta will continue to monitor the situation closely

Follwoing the bombing of the El-Boutrosiya Church in Cairo, the Prime Minister wrote a letter to the Egyptian President to convey her condolences to the victims families, as well as to the Egyptian people. Additionally, the Foreign Secretary spoke to the Egyptian Foreign Minister to express his sympathy and reiterate the UK's resolve to stand united with Egypt in defence of its people's right to live together in peace.
The British Government continues to collaborate with the Egyptian Government on a wide range of issues, including security and counter-terrosrism.

Uzbekistan is a country that the FCO has designated as a Human Rights Priority Country. We regularly continue to raise individual human rights cases with the Uzbek authorities, play an active and visible part in human rights activities in Uzbekistan and fund projects on governance reform, anti-corruption, torture prevention and strengthening women's rights.

We regularly raise human rights issues with Azerbaijan, including freedom of religious belief. Most recently, on 5 December, I discussed human rights in a meeting with the Ambassador of Azerbaijan. The British Embassy in Baku engages with officials from the State Committee Working with Religious Associations and we regularly meet representatives of religious communities in both Azerbaijan and the UK to discuss religious freedom.

The regulation of activities in Lough Foyle is the responsibility of the Loughs Agency, a cross-border body established under the Belfast Agreement of 1998. We remain fully committed to these arrangements and continue to work closely with the Irish Government over improvements to the management of the Lough. Like the Irish Government, we do not anticipate these issues forming part of the negotiations over the UK’s exit from the European Union.

That this House notes the recent publication by the Equality Commission in Northern Ireland of its 26th Annual Monitoring Report which, despite one of its key findings in the opening section of the report indicating that every year since 2006 Protestants have comprised fewer of those people gaining employment than Roman Catholics, has not, in this or previous reports, made any serious effort to analyse why this under-representation has occurred over a 10 year period; and calls on the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to ensure that this repeated failure is addressed as a matter of urgency.
