That this House commends the work of the European Squirrels Initiative in saving red squirrels; notes with concern that the number of grey squirrels re-released into the wild, under licences granted by Natural England, has reached 257 over the last 18 months; condemns Natural England for breaking section 14 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 without regard for Britain's native red squirrel population; and calls on the Government to take urgent action to prevent further decline of the red squirrel population in the UK.

That this House is concerned at the continuing reductions in Government support for rural buses in Cumbria which have seen a loss of ??340,000 in subsidy since 2006; asks the Government to indicate as soon as possible whether there will be grant regime to replace the Rural Bus Subsidy Grant and if so, to state what level of funding will be available as well as the conditions which will be attached to this grant and what types of service a replacement grant regime would support; calls on the Government to recognise that lack of transport in rural areas is one of the greatest causes of social exclusion; and believes that funding support for buses in Cumbria should be restored to the levels of 2006.

That this House, while recognising the need for savings to be made by HM Revenue and Customs, is deeply concerned with the changes proposed for Cumbria; fears that, alongside changes proposed in other areas such as on post offices and health care provision and possible closures of job centres, there will be a detrimental effect on the ability to attract future economic investment into an area which is the poorest sub-region in Europe; notes that Cumbria cannot afford to lose jobs of this quality in an area where much work is seasonal and less well-paid; further notes that these cuts will not allow staff to provide the quality of service that the public in this and other rural areas with poor transport links need to keep them on a par with their urban neighbours; is disturbed by the trend towards the centralisation and remoteness of service that other businesses are now reversing; points out that this is a public service and that a network of local offices is required which might not be appropriate outside a public service; and wonders whether HM Revenue and Customs will be fit for service in the near future if these proposed cuts are carried out.
