In those statistics, the Minister did not mention that the Prison Service still has the highest sickness absence in the civil service, that sickness absence in the 10 worst offending prisons has fallen only from 22 days to 15 days a year, or that, astonishingly, prison officers in two prisons are taking one in every five weeks off sick. What real progress is she intending to make to get on top of that appalling problem and manage our prisons properly?

The number of prison officers sustaining an injury while on duty is not routinely collected. Injuries to officer grades caused by accidents or assaults resulting in absence from work and attracting sick leave excusal are recorded. Sick excusal is granted after seven working days for accidents on duty and immediately for assaults. This form of sickness absence for the public sector Prison Service of England and Wales is shown in table 1.The number of individual cases of sick excusal due to accidents or assaults is not available for 2000–01. Information on the total number of accidents and near-misses are also recorded centrally for the public sector Prison Service of England and Wales since 2003–04. This data cannot be disaggregated by grade. The data in table 2 represent all recorded accidents and near-misses for all staff (including those due to assaults), and not just those where injury occurred.Information about staff in the Scottish and Northern Ireland prison services is the responsibility of the Scottish Executive and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland respectively. Information on privately managed prisons is not held centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

Due to a change of computer system during 1995–96 reliable data on staffing are not available prior to April 1997. At 30 June 2005, 24,180 officer grade staff (prison officers, senior officers and principal officers) were employed at public sector prison establishments (excluding Headquarters). A breakdown by each establishment is contained in the following table. Information on staffing levels within prisons managed by the private sector is not collected centrally in this form and is therefore not available.

[203365] Paul Goggins: No information is available on the number of officers granted medical retirement specifically due to work-related stress. The following table contains information on the total number of prison officers, senior officers and principal officers granted medical retirement since 1998 for any reason, within public sector establishments. Information on medical retirements is not available for 1997. The Office for Contracted Prisons does not collect information on medical retirements as privately managed prisons are not contracted to supply this information. _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Mr. Gerrard: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what the average salaries of prison officers in (a) public and (b) private prisons were on the latest date for which figures are available; [217296] (2) what comparison he has made of terms and conditions of staff in public and private prisons. [217298] Paul Goggins: The latest figures available for the average salary of a prison officer employed in the England and Wales Prison Service are for January 2005. Excluding allowances this is £23,307 for a prison officer, £27,380 for a senior officer and £29,508 for a principal officer. The Prison Service Pay Review Body provided a comparison of the terms and conditions of staff in public and private prisons as part of its September 2004 analysis of Prison Service pay.
