To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to recent reports on the Australian Land200 programme, what assessment his Department makes of the security of critical systems when acquiring those systems from overseas suppliers.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has robust procedures in place to assess the security of both critical systems and their suppliers, whether those systems are procured from overseas or within the UK. The MOD requires all suppliers to engage with the Defence Cyber Protection Partnership, which ensures cyber security controls in the supply chain are proportionate to the nature of the contract. The MOD further ensures that critical systems are designed and operated with proportionate security controls in place, through an accreditation process which begins at the design phase and is regularly assessed through life.

I congratulate my hon. Friend on raising this issue. Since taking on this brief, I have been interested to discover how the MOD might broaden access for small and medium-sized enterprises, and he represents exactly the sort of constituency where such opportunities are greatest. There will be businesses in his area that can contribute directly to the MOD supply chain, but with Rolls-Royce in Derby immediately to the south of his constituency, we can work with our prime contractors to ensure that they can also access those supply chains.

Many businesses across Amber Valley benefit from MOD contracts, but there are many more that could. What more can the Department do to work alongside businesses to help spread out these contracts and jobs around the country?

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, whether he has plans in place for joint procurement between the UK and EU member states after the UK leaves the EU; and if he will make a statement.

The UK regularly collaborates with international partners and will continue to explore the opportunity to work with partners in Europe and beyond on joint capability programmes.
