Letter from Lesley Strathie, dated 21 October 2008: "The Secretary of State has asked me to reply to your questions concerning the advertising, promotion and filling of apprenticeships in Newcastle-under-Lyme and North Staffordshire. This is something which falls within the responsibilities delegated to me as Chief Executive of Jobcentre Plus.""The Learning and Skills Council have lead responsibility for managing apprenticeships. They hold details of employers interested in offering apprenticeships and provide the information to further education establishments and the local authority Connexions services to promote the opportunities available. They do not advertise the availability of apprenticeships through Jobcentre Plus.""We direct customers who are interested in apprenticeships to the Learning and Skills Council and the local authority Connexions service for young people who hold information on all apprenticeships available. We make this referral through our network of advisers within Jobcentres. Our website www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk also directs customers to the apprenticeships website www.apprenticeships.gov.uk, hosted by the Learning and Skills Council.""We do accept vacancies offering an apprenticeship direct from the employer. Labour Market Recruitment Advisers in local Jobcentres are on hand to offer advice to those employers and direct them to the Connexions Service and the Learning and Skills Council for more information and support regarding apprenticeships.""We do not collect formal data on vacancies we have advertised that have offered an apprenticeship. Since 1997, policing in Staffordshire, including Tamworth, has improved with additional investment in officer numbers, the introduction of police community support officers and neighbourhood policing teams and national initiatives designed to improve citizen focussed police and reduce police bureaucracy.We are taking forward the recommendations made by Sir Ronnie Flanagan, primarily in areas of overhauling the processes around Stop and Account, the RIPA review, and the use of technology to increase efficiency. Staffordshire constabulary is one of the four forces piloting radical new ways of reducing paperwork following Sir Ronnie's review.In terms of investment for Staffordshire police, the sum of general government support has risen from £110.3 million to £114.3 million, an increase of 3.6 per cent. Staffordshire had 2,271 police officers on 30 September 2007, an increase of 60 since 1997. There were also 225 police community support officers (PCSOs) and 1,293 police staff (an increase of 530 since 1997). Tamworth, part of the Trent Valley Division had 50 Police Community Support Officers and 417 police officers on 31 March 2007, an increase of 25 since March 2004.The Police Performance Assessment of 2006-07 showed Staffordshire to have built on the strong performance evident in the 2006 baseline assessment. The report shows strong delivery of performance including: two ““excellents”” for tackling serious crime and protecting the public and implementing neighbourhood policing; as well as four ““goods”” for tackling crime, protecting vulnerable people, satisfaction and fairness, and resources and efficiency.

Mrs. Dean: To ask the Deputy Prime Minister what recent assessment he has made of the total estimated value of outstanding disabled
facilities grant work in (a) England, (b) Staffordshire and (c) East Staffordshire. [113154]
Mr. McNulty: I announced on 10 February this year a substantial increase in Government funding for the disabled facilities grant
budget for England. The increase to £99 million will be for each of the next three years. This was in response to requests from
local authorities for additional resources to deal with an increasing demand for housing adaptations from disabled people and their
families, (including the need for level access showers).
The Government does not, however, monitor in detail the level of outstanding work under this programme, or the unmet need for
level-access showers, either at national or local authority level.

I announced on 10 February this year a substantial increase in Government funding for the disabled facilities grant budget for
England. The increase to £99 million will be for each of the next three years. This was in response to requests from local
authorities for additional resources to deal with an increasing demand for housing adaptations from disabled people and their
families, (including the need for level-access showers). The Government do not, however, monitor in detail the level of outstanding
work under this programme, or the unmet need for level-access showers, either at national or local authority level.

Mr. McNulty: In each region the Government Office and the Housing Corporation produce a Regional Housing Statement working closely
with local and regional stakeholders including local authorities and housing associations. This highlights key housing issues and
pressures in each region and helps to identify regional priorities. The corporation also produces a Regional Investment Strategy
which contains priorities for investment in that region. These priorities are also discussed with local and regional stakeholders.
