The Government do not collect data on the number of adults resident in a particular area who are not in higher education, so it is not possible to calculate the proportion of 18 to 25 year-olds from Merseyside and Crosby who were in higher education in any given year.The number of 18 to 25 year-old students from Merseyside and Crosby who were enrolled in higher education are shown as an alternative in the following table. Information for the years 1994 to 1997 is given in the first and second tables. The figures cover students who apply to full-time undergraduate courses via UCAS. UCAS does not cover applications to part-time undergraduate or postgraduate courses, or students who apply directly to institutions. Prior to the formation of UCAS in 1994, figures were published separately for the two admission systems, the Universities Central Council on Admissions (UCCA) and the Polytechnic and College Admission Service (PCAS). The data for accepted applicants for these years are shown in the third and fourth tables. Comparable data for applicants are not available.

Nationality is not a compulsory return on the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) student record. As domicile is compulsory (and is therefore included for all students), this has been provided as an alternative.In the 2007/08 academic year, 85 per cent. of enrolments on higher education courses at English higher education institutions were UK domiciled.The following table shows the percentage of undergraduate enrolments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses who were UK domiciled.

Overall, for all students from England, the UCAS figures show that, compared to 2007, applicants to full-time undergraduate courses who had been accepted for entry in 2008, rose by 7.4 per cent. to 329,700, the highest ever. This comes on the back of a rise in accepted applicants of 6.1 per cent. between 2006 and 2007.

² The large increase in part-time enrolments in the 1995/96 academic year is due to three factors—two institutions transferred from the FE sector to the HE sector, a number of nursing colleges merged with HEIs and several institutions recorded certain types of part-time study for the first time.
³ The decrease in part-time enrolments in the 1996/97 academic year is due to the Open University providing a split between part-time first year students and other year students for the first time. Students taking Open University credits were all returned as studying at undergraduate level, although some were studying postgraduate level courses. This has the effect of reducing part-time postgraduate numbers.

From the 1998/99 academic year and onwards the methodology for counting students was changed from a snapshot (census date) to a whole year count (students active in the academic year) in order to better record students following non traditional enrolment patterns. Therefore the figures in the following table are on a different basis to those in the aforementioned table.
