Mr. Woodward: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what proportion of the total bus subsidy in England supports services operating in (a) metropolitan areas, (b) non-metropolitan areas and (c) Greater London. [91407] Ms Glenda Jackson: There are two elements of bus service subsidy: the support of services by local authorities from their own resources, for socially necessary services; and Fuel Duty Rebate (FDR), which is paid by central Government directly to the bus operators for the local bus services they operate. Figures for local authority support for 1997-98 (the latest year figures are currently available for) are: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. £ million Percentage Metropolitan areas 98 53 Non-metropolitan areas 86 47 Total 184 -- _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Subsidy for buses in Greater London is provided as part of the London Transport grant. In 1997-98 London Transport buses made a gross operating profit of £0.1 million. The figure for FDR support in England in 1998-99 was £224.5 million. Statistics are not kept on the split of this total between services in metropolitan and non- metropolitan areas and Greater London.

The following authorities bid for one major scheme each: Lincolnshire, Northumberland, Stockton-on-Tees, Halton, Salford, West Yorkshire PTA, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire, West Sussex, Windsor and Maidenhead, Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Birmingham, Sandwell, Warwickshire, Barnsley, Kirklees, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Bexley, Enfield, Greenwich and St. Helens. Mr. Baker: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will name the road schemes by each local authority which make up the existing commitments in the Local Transport Settlement 1999-2000; and if he will indicate for each (a) the money awarded in the 1999-2000 local transport settlement and (b) the total costs. [67021] Ms Glenda Jackson: [holding answer 26 January 1999]: The table shows allocations made to grant supported major road schemes as part of the 1999-2000 local transport capital settlement. These schemes were accepted for funding between the 1986-87 and 1997-98 settlements. The Government are committed to providing sufficient funding for their completion, provided they continue to make reasonable progress, although we do not commit to fund the full costs of a major local road scheme. The table does not include committed expenditure on non-road schemes or resources which cannot be identified to a single road scheme, such as resources to meet applications during 1999-00 for grant under the Industrial Development Act 1982. _________________________________________________________________________________________________. [67592] Ms Glenda Jackson: Separate figures cannot be given for bridge strengthening only. The following table shows annual allocations to English local highway authorities for bridge maintenance, assessment and strengthening, both in 1999 prices and as a proportion of the total allocations as part of the Transport Policies and Programme (TPP) system. Mr. Matthew Taylor: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what has been the total cost of new road projects authorised by him since 1 May 1997 in (a) Devon and (b) Cornwall. [40834] Ms Glenda Jackson: My Department has not accepted any major new road local authority road schemes for funding in either Devon or Cornwall since 1 May 1997. It is open to authorities to fund minor new road projects (those costing up to £2 million) using the resources allocated to them for transport packages. Information on the use they are making of these resources will not be available until they submit their Transport Policies and Programme bids in July. All resources allocated for local safety schemes are for use on road improvements at locations where there is a record of accidents. The following table summarises allocations made to councils in the Devon and Cornwall areas under those headings as part of the local transport capital settlement for 1998-99: _________________________________________________________________________________________________.
