Mr. Bercow: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport if he will make a statement on his policy towards funding of
the European Union youth orchestra; and how much support was given from public funds in the current financial year. [158755]
Mr. Alan Howarth: The European Union youth orchestra offers young musicians from across the European Union the opportunity to work
together to extend their musical experience, and to perform with leading world conductors and soloists. The specialist training and
preparation for concerts provides invaluable training and experience for young musicians and can help in the pursuit of a
professional career.
The European Union youth orchestra is primarily supported financially by the European Union. Additional contributions come from the
15 member states of the European Union, of which the UK's contribution was £30,000 from the British Council for the financial year
ending 30 September 2000. Funding is also received from corporate and private sponsors.

Mrs. Ellman: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport if he will list the listed buildings there are in (a) the
City of Liverpool and (b) Riverside constituency; and how much funding has been allocated to them to assist conservation in the last

Mr. Alan Howarth: Statistics are not available for these geographical areas, but there are 3,125 listed buildings on Merseyside. The
list can be consulted at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, at Liverpool City Council or at the National Monuments Record
Centre in Swindon. Over the last three years, buildings in Liverpool have attracted conservation grants from the Heritage Lottery
Fund (HLF) and English Heritage totalling £43.4 million, of which £42.8 million was for buildings in Liverpool Riverside. These
figures include a grant of £26.7 million from the HLF for development and refurbishment of the Liverpool Museum and Walker Art
Gallery.

Mr. Alan Howarth: East England Arts is contributing £19,900 over three years to help Thurrock unitary authority to fund an Arts

Miss McIntosh: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what representations he has received on the grant to

Mr. Alan Howarth: My Department has been charged by the Chancellor with taking forward the development of the new grant scheme for
listed places of worship. The announcement has attracted considerable interest, and my officials have taken numerous inquiries since
the 7 March. It is my intention that the scheme should be operational as early as possible and I will make a further announcement in
due course.

Mr. McNamara: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, pursuant to the answer of 6 March 2001, Official Report,
column 202W, on dancing schools, what is his estimate of the number of voluntary dance classes; how much financial assistance is
provided for these classes; what his estimate is of the number of Irish dancing schools provided by the voluntary sector; and how
much financial assistance is provided for these schools. [153580]
Mr. Alan Howarth: Dance classes are provided through a diverse range of public, privately-funded, and voluntary provision. Because
of this diversity, an assessment of the number of voluntary dance classes would prove a significant undertaking. The Voluntary Arts
Network advises that there is anecdotal information on provision of voluntary dance classes, but that a comprehensive and thorough
assessment is not available based on current information. The Foundation for Community Dance, the national development agency for
community dance, recently undertook a mapping exercise to establish the range of participation in dance provided by the funded
sector across England. This excluded local private dance schools, organisations specifically catering for recreational dance forms
(including Ceroc) and dance opportunities offered by the commercial sector. However, sources include: local authorities
(significant), European funds, the Single Regeneration Budget, the Health Service, Regional Arts Boards, Lottery, trusts and
foundations. Private, commercial and voluntary provision is also significant.

Mr. McNamara: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what his estimate is of the number of dancing schools in

for ethnic minority schools of dancing; and what the level of public expenditure was on each variety of dance in each of the past

Mr. Alan Howarth: The Council for Dance Education and Training (CDET), an independent body representing dance training providers,
accredits courses at vocational dance training schools. CDET's membership includes 24 vocational dance schools in England: 13 in
London, five more in the south-east, and six in the midlands or north-west. Ten of these focus on musical theatre (dance), six on
ballet, four on contemporary dance, three on both musical theatre and ballet, and one on these three styles. In addition, the CDET
is aware of at least 10 other schools in England which say they offer vocational training. Information on Welsh schools is a matter
for the devolved Administration.
Funding for dance is provided through a range of public and private sources, at central Government and local levels. DCMS support
for dance is undertaken by the Arts Council of England and the regional arts boards. The information is not readily available in the
form requested, but the Arts Council has provided the following breakdown of grant in aid for specific dance causes, and headline
figures for Arts Lottery expenditure on dance, as follows:

Arts Council Lottery dance expenditure/awards total £133,074,167. It includes: New Audiences Programme: £698,000; Regional Arts
Lottery Programme: £4,850,109; Interim Funding Scheme £19,114,413 (includes awards to drama colleges, and a 50 per cent. grant from
the DfEE).
Sport England provides some support for ballroom and Latin dancing, and some physical movement related dance forms. Grant in aid
provision totalled over £300,000 in the last five years, with Lottery awards of at least £420,000, although the overall figure is
likely to be higher where dance has featured as part of broader Lottery applications.

Mrs. Ann Cryer: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what plans he has to strengthen collaboration between the
national museums and galleries and the museums and galleries funded by his Department. [149402]
Mr. Alan Howarth: The national museums and galleries sponsored by my Department already have a good record for assisting their
regional counterparts through, for example, tours and loans of their works and the provision of curatorial advice.
In recent years the national museums and galleries have established direct liaison with their regional counterparts involving closer
interaction. We will be encouraging the further development of such interaction.
Currently, a number of directors of our national museums and galleries are involved with a task group created by the Secretary of
State and chaired by Lord Evans, Chairman of Resource, which is looking at issues facing regional museums and galleries and ways to
help maximise their contributions to our cultural life.

Mr. Alan Howarth: The regional arts boards are not directly funded by central Government but from the allocation of grant-in-aid
made to the Arts Council of England. Fluctuations in funding to individual arts boards reflect the increases and decreases in
grant-in-aid to the Arts Council, these being a matter for its decision. The following table drawn from ACE's annual reports and
accounts details both the grant-in-aid to the Arts Council between 1992-93 and 1998-99 and for each of the regional arts boards.

Mr. Cash: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what the levels of spending were on (a) library services and
(b) leisure services per head of population in (i) Staffordshire and (ii) each other county of England (1) in the current year and
(2) in each of the last three years, distinguishing in each case the element represented by Standard Spending Assessment. [148295]
Mr. Alan Howarth: It is not possible to list spending on leisure services in the private and voluntary sectors. However, local
authorities do report their own expenditure on leisure services and these data are shown for Staffordshire and every other county{1}
in England on a per head basis in the table. Local authorities report their own expenditure on library services and this is also
shown for
Staffordshire and other counties{1} in England on a per head basis. A definition for this expenditure data follows.
The SSA system does not make a separate provision for library or leisure services; rather these are two of the many services funded
through the Environmental, Protective and Cultural Services SSA Block. Consequently I am unable to provide the information
requested.
Definition of Expenditure Date
Expenditure on services is defined as net current expenditure on employees and running expenses less sales, fees, charges, internal
recharges, other non-grant income (such as receipts from other authorities). It is gross of expenditure funded by specific and
special grants.
{1} The figure for each county includes all local authorities within that area.
