There is a degree of concentration of media ownership in Chile, and the two main press conglomerates (El Mercurio and La Tercera) manage more than 70% of the country's newspapers. Nonetheless Chile enjoys an independent press and functioning democratic political system which safeguards the rights to freedom of speech, of expression and of the press.
