The purpose of the Global Coalition is to degrade and defeat Daesh. As part of this work, the Global Coalition has been engaged in a comprehensive campaign to disrupt and prevent Daesh from raising funds. US military decisions and troop movements are a matter for the US government.

The British Government is deeply concerned by reports of the execution of civilians in north east Syria. We are in regular contact with the US regarding the rapidly developing situation. The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump last week, and the Foreign and Defence Secretaries have also spoken with their US counterparts. We are united in calling on Turkey to end the operation, and on all parties to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law. The UK has no plans to seek a referral of Turkey to the International Criminal Court.

We regularly discuss the situation in north east Syria, including the future of the territory, with the governments of the United States and Turkey. The Prime Minister discussed this issue with President Erdogan on 24 September. Senior officials most recently discussed this with their US counterparts during meetings at the UN General Assembly from 23-27 September.

We engage regularly with the US on Middle East issues. As the Prime Minister has previously stated, the UK wants to see the Turkish economy flourish. Since President Trump's announcement on withdrawal from Syria we have remained in close contact with the US, Turkey and other allies.

Since military operations began, the Global Coalition against Daesh and its partners in Syria and Iraq have recaptured the vast majority of Daesh territory. Important advances continue to be made in the last small Daesh pocket in eastern Syria. As the United States recognises, it is important that the withdrawal of US forces from Syria takes place in a way which allows this significant progress to be maintained. However, much remains to be done in the global campaign against Daesh. Daesh will remain a threat, whether they hold territory or not. We have already seen indications over the past year in Iraq and Syria of Daesh transitioning to a clandestine network. We remain committed to the Global Coalition and its objective of ensuring Daesh's enduring defeat.

The Foreign Secretary spoke with United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on 19 December with regard to President Trump's decision, and senior officials have been in close contact with their US counterparts on the implementation of this decision. As the US has acknowledged, much remains to be done to maintain the successful progress achieved in the global campaign against Daesh. We, like the US, remain committed to the Global Coalition and its objective of ensuring Daesh's enduring defeat.

The UK shares the concerns of France and the United States about continuing reports of chemical weapons use by the Syrian regime. UK officials are in regular contact with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, whose experts are investigating the allegations of chemical weapon use in Eastern Ghouta, alongside a number of other incidents in the past two years. The British Government has made clear that it condemns the use of chemical weapons by anyone anywhere and that those who use chemical weapons should be held to account.
There are no current plans for military action against the Asad regime. UK efforts are focused on using every lever to de-escalate the conflict in Syria and ultimately to achieve a political settlement.

We engage regularly with our US partners on a range of issues related to Yemen, including the humanitarian situation. We work closely with them in support of a stable, secure Yemen which poses no threat to regional countries or beyond. The US, together with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, participated in a Ministerial meeting we convened on 22 September in the margins of the UN General Assembly. All participants acknowledged the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen and agreed that more must be done to achieve a political solution. The Foreign Secretary raised the situation in Yemen with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson most recently on 9 October. Any further enquiries relating to US policy should be redirected to the US authorities.
