Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much his Department has spent on the Cipher project to date.

Answer

The total cost of the CIPHER project was £46 million. Work ceased in June 2013 following the Assessment Phase which concluded that the project would not meet the full defence capability required to offer long term value for money.

The work carried out during the CIPHER Assessment Phase is being used to inform necessary future work to allow the capability to be met.
