Schools: Playing Fields

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what his policy is on the sale of school playing fields; and if he will make a statement.

Answer

Strict controls concerning the disposal of school playing fields are in place. Approval must be sought from the Secretary of State before publicly funded school playing fields can be sold. Decisions on applications to dispose of school land are not taken lightly. In every case Ministers take into account all relevant matters

before coming to a decision. This can include information provided by the applicant, objectors, the school playing field advisory panel and Department for Education officials, as well as consideration of what is best for pupils' education and their wider school life.

This Government has only approved sales if the school has closed, has merged, or it is proposed that equal or better facilities are put in their place. This is to ensure that any disposal of playing fields does not have a detrimental effect on young people's opportunity to access sporting provision.
