To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills if he will estimate the number of UK companies eligible to apply for (a) general and (b) global licences under the EU's Defence Transfer Directive 2009/43/EC.

All UK companies are eligible to use UK Open General Export Licences and Open Individual Export Licences for the export of defence goods, subject to their possessing a satisfactory track record of compliance and being able to satisfy all the conditions attached to these licences. These open licences equate to the general and global licences referred to in EU Directive 2009/43/EC, and the implementation of the directive will not change that situation.
