Schools: Disability

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what steps his Department has taken to ensure that adequate funding is available to schools to provide disability awareness training in line with their public sector equality duty.

Answer

We fund schools to meet the needs of all their pupils. Core schools funding, for children and young people aged 5 to 16 (and up to 25 in the case of those with high needs) will rise to £43.5 billion by 2020. Head teachers are responsible for deciding how best to spend their budgets, for example to ensure that their staff are adequately trained.

Schools have a range of duties under the Equality Act 2010, including the Public Sector Equality Duty. Disability awareness training would be one way in which schools can ensure that they meet those duties.
