Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what plans he has to make Zanamirin available over the counter in pharmacies for self treatment of influenza.

Answer: Dr. Tonge: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans he has to make zanamivir available over the counter in pharmacies for self treatment of influenza. [140827] Ms Stuart: Relenza (zanamivir) is classified as a Prescription Only Medicine under criteria embodied in United Kingdom and European Community legislation. We have taken steps to allow for the direct supply of zanamivir by health professionals (including pharmacists and nurses) under the generalised directions of a doctor through patient group directions. There are no proposals to change the legal status of zanamivir to pharmacy only.
