To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, if the recent comments to Politeia by the Chief Inspector of Schools represent the Government's policy on education funding.

Mr. Willis: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if the recent comments to Politeia by the Chief Inspector of Schools represent the Government's policy on education funding. [40821] Mr. Byers: The Government have a commitment to increase the proportion of national income spent on education. The additional funding made available in 1998-99 is the first step in delivering this pledge.
